Phoenix Coyotes/NHL Draft Preview

Today is round 1 of the NHL Entry Draft and the Philadelphia Flyers decided to get the fun started early yesterday as they dealt Jeff Carter and Mike Richards to Columbus and Los Angeles in separate deals. You rarely see 1st line centers get moved, let alone two 1st line centers moved within an hour and from the same team. While there may not be any more moves of this magnitude this weekend (it’s possible though) there is sure to be tons of speculation during the draft on where players will get selected as well as on potential trades. Let’s take a look at what the Phoenix Coyotes and General Manager Don Maloney might be up to.
In terms of young defenseman, the Coyotes pipeline is nearly as deep and talented as any other team in the NHL. On the NHL roster you have Keith Yandle and David Schlemko and then in the pipeline there is former 1st round draft picks Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Brandon Gormley. Yandle is already a top pairing defenseman and despite being a restricted free agent, a contract will be worked out at some point this summer whether it is short term to see how the ownership situation plays out or long term of course. Both Ekman- Larsson and Gormley project as top pairing defensemen as well. The Coyotes also have Chris Summers, Maxim Goncharov and Michael Stone in the system. Like Ekman- Larsson, Summers spent some time with the Coyotes last year and he may have a shot at securing a bottom pairing spot this season.
On the front end the Coyotes don’t have the same type of depth throughout their system. At the NHL level there are youngsters Kyle Turris and Mikkel Boedker. In the pipeline there is Brett MacLean who projects to be a top 6 forward, but he is running out of options. It’s time for MacLean to make the big club or possibly be used as a trade chip to bring a young goaltender or a top 6 forward. Then there is Viktor Tikhonov who may not have a top 6 scoring touch, but he will be a very good 3rd line player. A few other notable forwards in the system are Chris Brown, newly acquired Ethan Werek and Andy Miele last year’s Hobby Baker Award winner.
In goal the Coyotes have a decent group of youngsters that may have a shot at the big club in the future. Mark Visentin, last year’s surprise late 1st round pick is still about 3 years or so away from possibly making the jump to the NHL, but while he is not considered an Elite prospect if his development keeps up he has a chance to be a #1 NHL goalie at some point. Other notables in the system include Mike Lee and Louis Domingue.
Looking ahead to this evenings 1st round the Coyotes currently have the 20th selection. Now General Manager Don Maloney has made it well known that he is willing to move this pick to either help the current NHL roster, or to possibly move up in the 1st round or even down in the 1st round to gain an extra asset. While you always should be taking the best player available, there is no doubt that the Coyotes will be leaning towards forwards (preferably centers) if all things are equal. Now while it’s impossible to really predict who the Coyotes will take as who knows what other teams will do in front of them as well, let’s take a look at a few players that might be available at the 20th selection that the Coyotes may have their eye on.
Sven Bartschi – LW 5-11 175lbs
Bartschi is a high energy player with good offensive upside. He does everything well, although he is not considered a future 1st line player, but a fairly safe bet to be a solid top 6 forward in the NHL down the road.
J.T. Miller – C/W 6-1 198lbs
Miller is a power forward who possesses good speed and a hard nose style of play. He does not have a great scoring touch by any means, but if developed properly can be a good 2nd line forward down the road who can put up 20-25 goals a year.
Mark McNeill – C 6-1 204lbs
McNeill can do a little bit of everything. He can fight, score, good playmaker, good defensively and very solid on the cycle. His compete level has been an issue, but potentially McNeill has the tools to be a very effective top 6 forward with high end potential to maybe even be a 1st line player down the line.
Boone Jenner – C 6-1 194lbs
Jenner is a future NHL captain without a doubt. He will do whatever it takes to win and while he may not have a very high offensive ceiling, he is an extremely solid playmaker. Jenner is a safe pick as he will no doubt play in the NHL at some point as a very good 3rd line center.
Other notables who might be available with the 20th selection are Zack Phillips, Mark Scheifele and the very intriguing Rocco Grimaldi.
If he is on board at #20 and the Coyotes stay with that selection I would take Mark McNeill. He has the highest ceililng out of all the players listed in terms of offensive potential mixed in with a solid two way game.
This weekend beginning tonight with the 1st round will be very exciting.
